Our Company

Waitohu was started by Josh Hastie after purchasing Trademark Paving, which was founded in 2007.

We specialise in segmental paving, hard and soft landscaping, and light civil works. Since our humble beginnings, we have grown to be the largest installer of segmental paving in the South Island. Our expertise has seen us play a big role in the Canterbury rebuild, successfully completing many landmark projects in Christchurch. We have also worked on many large projects across the South Island as our reputation has grown.

We have become known for our quality workmanship, project delivery, and excellence in everything we do. That’s why we have clients that use us time and time again.

Over the years we have grown our capacity, and now offer full end-to-end solutions that include project management services, quantity surveying, natural stone paving supply, full product procurement, and project delivery.

We live by our company values and that’s reflected in our quality work and the strong relationships that we have built in the industry.

Waitohu is an active member of Civil Contractors New Zealand.

Josh Hastie

Josh is the Managing Director of Waitohu and has been operations manager at Trademark Paving since its inception in 2007.
Before Trademark Paving, Josh worked as a foreman for another paving contractor for several years. He also completed a 6-year stint in the New Zealand Army and was selected to serve on two overseas deployments.

Josh’s excellent technical knowledge and his ability to build strong teams that go above and beyond to deliver for clients is something that Trademark has gained a strong reputation for. Josh has led teams on some of the highest profile projects in Christchurch and Dunedin, and also on award-winning residential projects.

Josh's technical expertise, combined with his approachable and friendly manner, has been a major factor in our success.

Health & Safety

Our proactive approach to health and safety affects our employees, our clients, and the public because we are first and foremost a people-orientated business.

Our dedicated health and safety manager leads a comprehensive program, which includes:

  • A detailed, site-specific safety plan for every project to identify potential hazards and the management steps required to either eliminate, isolate, or minimize the risk

  • Tertiary accreditation with ACC for Workplace Safety Management Practices, Site Safe membership, and a 100% grading with SiteWise

  • Current Site Safe construction passports for all Waitohu staff, and at least one first Aid staff member on each site team

  • Weekly toolbox talks created in-house to discuss safe practice specific to our industry

  • All site staff undertake a graduated training program to prove competency in operating our industry appliances and equipment

  • Internal auditing programs of continual self-evaluation and improvements.

Built to protect

It is the nature of construction that noise, dust and, waste can be significant by-products of our activities.

At Waitohu, we know that it is up to us to protect our planet so that the next generations can enjoy it.  We consider sustainability as part of our legacy, lessening our impact on the environment and creating a future we can all be proud of.

We use the same analytical processes that we use for health and safety to identify and manage the potential environmental impact of our operations.
